The Presidents Race put on by the Washington Nationals during every home game has become one of the more entertaining in-game events around the league, mostly because of the ridiculous ways Teddy manages to blow the race nearly every time. For the 2013 season, a fifth president will be joining Teddy (Theodore Roosevelt), Abe (Abraham Lincoln), George (George Washington), and Tom IThomas Jefferson): Bill (William Howard Taft).
Taft's selection is an odd one, considering his status as an unremarkable one-term president. But the Nationals are essentially going with the logic that Teddy handpicked Taft to enter the race, much like he handpicked Taft to succeed him as president in 1908. But there's also a baseball connection with Taft, as he essentially created the tradition of throwing out the ceremonial first pitch, which he did in 1910 at Griffith Stadium.
