The New England Patriots have been disjointed at practice all preseason and things haven’t gotten much better as of late, with the Patriots having perhaps its worst performance yet on Tuesday. And starting quarterback Mac Jones didn’t have a lot of answers.
The Patriots are still in the process of installing their new offensive scheme and finding their identity on that side of the ball after the departure of former offensive coordinator Josh McDaniel. Bill Belichick brought in former NFL head coaches Joe Judge and Matt Patricia and the three seem to be collaborating to run the offense, but things haven’t been going well.
During his weekly appearance on WEEI’s “Merloni, Fauria & Mego,” Jones was asked if he was willing to accept that the installation process has been a failure. While Jones wasn’t willing to call it a failure, he also made it quite clear that they aren’t where they want to be.
“Failure is putting a label on something that’s a process. We’re just trying to focus on the process, and not the result. Failure would be considered a result,” Jones said, via the Boston Herald. “We’re just trying to work through it all. … We don’t need to overcomplicate it. It’s a simple game if you make it a simple game. We’re all trying to get there, which doesn’t happen overnight.”
The Patriots’ preseason certainly has been an ordeal. Between Belichick getting testy with a reporter, a play-calling battle between Judge and Patricia, and multiple fights at practice, the team may just be happy to get to the regular season. That is, as long as it can figure out its offense.
