The New York Jets may be in the market again for a new quarterback next season following the failure of Zach Wilson. Wilson struggled this season and was even benched for his backup. A major part of the young quarterback’s issues stemmed from seeming entitled at times and that he didn’t take responsibility for his poor play, which didn’t sit well with his teammates.
Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback and ESPN NFL analyst Steve Young thinks the problem lies within the Jets organization and how they handled Wilson. According to Young, what Wilson really needed was a mentor.

“Zach doesn’t need tough love. He doesn’t need somebody to see how tough he is. He needs a big brother — a young, knowledgeable innovator, someone who he can trust and says to him, ‘You know what, despite everything that’s happened, Zach, I believe in you. You can get this done.’ Zach needs that,” Young said during an appearance on The Michael Kay Show. “Mike kind of kept him at arm’s length and kind of gave him the tough love aspect, and I don’t think that’s really useful for Zach.”
Young added he thinks fired Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury might be a perfect fit to be an offensive coordinator or quarterback coach for the Jets.
The former 49ers QB concluded that what’s going on with Wilson is not physical but mental.
“Zach’s problems are not physical. Zach’s problems are expectations and how he deals with expectations,” Young said.
